From events linked to religion or music or sporting activities, Malaga has a diverse range suited to the range of tourists who flock to the area. There are lots of great activities to add to your holiday to make it extra special and unique.
Religious Festivals
In mid February the religious Fiestas de Carnaval takes place before the 40 days of Lent. The celebration usually includes a variety of entertainment, games and fun for everyone. This ranges from children’s activities such as fancy dress contests and the Pinata Sunday. Moreover it provides a cultural experience for the adults with the singing contests, street parade and elaborate costumes.
Another great experience which will truly delve you into Malaga tradition is the festival Feria del Carmen. This takes place between 16-19 July in Fuengirola and celebrates the Virgin Carmen, the patron saint of the Los Bolichos district. The celebrations begin with the Saint’s image being paraded around the area followed by locals carrying flowers and candles. Then men carrying a statue of the Virgin Carmen on their shoulders and wade into the Mediterranean Sea until placing her on a boat. This unique festival is usually accompanied with live music and fireworks which create a great ambience and heighten the celebratory atmosphere.
Bullfighting Festivals and Events
Whilst bullfighting events may not be to everyone’s taste, they are a traditional and exciting event for both tourists and locals. The Feria de Malaga takes place between the 13th and 22nd August in Malaga and sees the streets burst with colour and music due to the live music and flamenco dancing which takes place as well as the bullfighting. Moreover the food on offer at the festival means you are able to taste the local Malaga cuisine. Another bullfighting event is the Pedro Romero Fair where in September the Ronda Bullring has displays of bullfighting. Around the bullring there are also displays of traditional costumes and carriages which enable you to become part of local celebrations and witness the Spanish culture on offer in Malaga.
Something Different
A different and unique festival on offer is the Annual Spanish Film Festival which takes place on the 1st May. The Malaga-born Antonio Bandares acts as the president of this established event which showcases Spanish film and talent. This important event enables you to witness modern Spanish culture through the films which are showcased at the festival.
